I recently moved back to Lewisville, TX and want to get a Kayak. I am on the Heavy Duty size, but much smaller that I was last year and shrinking each day. Looking for recommendations for a stable Kayak for fishing freshwater.

Wilderness Systems Ride 115 or 135; Malibu Kayaks Mini-X, X-Factor, or Stealth 12 or 14; Jackson Coosa or Big Tuna; Hobie Outback; Diablo Paddlesports Adios or Chupacabra; Native Watercraft Redfish 12 or 14. To name a couple.

Where do you plan on fishing the most? larg lakes like Lewisville, smaller lakes, rivers, ponds (like the Grasslands)?

What's your budget?

How are you going to store/transport your kayak? Longer is more difficult.

Wilderness systems Ride 115 Max Capacity: 500lbs or the Ride 135 Max Capacity of 550lbs and both very stable. You have to think about your weight and then the weight of your gear. If the kayak max is 400 or 450 and if you weight close to 300 like me then that won't leave much room for gear and camping supplies if you plan any river trips. If you would like to try the Ride 135 I could meet you at Lewisville sometime or you can contact Mariner Sails and they will let you demo some kayaks too.

I live up by Ray Roberts and have a Wilderness Ride 115 if you would like to try one out to see if you like it. I'm 6'-2" @ 230lbs and am very comfortable with the stability. So much so that it's the first kayak so short that I've been able to stand and fish from. I love mine!!! thumb

Bob, all of the yaks mentioned are sit-on-top. I have a Wilderness Systems Commander 140, and you would have to kill me to get it from me. I never get wet, my carrying capacity is 475#, and it's very stable. I would encourage you to check out the Commanders (12' and 14') as well as the Native Watercraft Ultimates.

I'm 6'4", 255#, and I can carry enough gear to spend a couple of days in my yak easily. And the Commanders come with gear track on top of both gunnels as well as down the length of both sides.

Alot of guys on here will call my kayak a SINK (sit-in-kayak), but I never get those comments when I'm on the water.

Thanks for all the info, it's really great to be back in Texas and away from all of the Snowbirds in Florida if you know what I mean.

Chef Bob,

Advice is good, but, you should take your time to personally check out and inspect ALL available options. Our store, Mariner Sails regularly keep most of the above mentioned yaks in stock, including several others (NuCanoe Frontier 12 and Kajun Cakak KC-12) that would be a good high capacity "big boy" fit. I want to invite you to visit our store for a personal no pressure inspection. While there, you can check out our extensive array of fishing accessories, get some good, objective advice, and we we can set up a demo appointment.

Hope to see you soon!

WS Ride 135 is very nice, it is my new baby lol. I can stand and fish from it at 230lbs 6'2" without much difficulty on calm waters, not that it is much of an option fishing the bays like I do.

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.
