I would start with four 30w's and maybe two 80w's.. I use 30w's and just ordered two 40w's.. Most of the time I use a small avet jigging reel for kings, snapper,Blackfin.

Thanks for the help I ordered 6 tiagra 50 wide and 2 30 wide and 1 80 wide I hope to troll the 50's and jig with the 30's. I have not had luck with Avet I have broken 2 any other lite rods for casting top water for tuna.

you ain't jiggin' for long with a 30 wide.........
An 80W is pointless off the texas coast, IMO unless you're going 1500'deep+ for swords. JMO, but I'd trade a couple of those tiagra 50w rigs into a couple of nice 30#, 50# casting rigs for tuna's, mahi, and other "opportunity" fish. Saragosa18k/OTI ocean extreme 40-60 is a good, mid-range, reliable combo for average gulf YFT's. you will also want some light troll gear (20#) for kings & such. a couple calstar wc-870c's with TLD-20's would be perfect. sounds like you've got the heavy trolling gear down, but I honestly doubt that will be the majority of what you do in the beginning. More than likely you'll end up rig-hopping & pulling gear inside of the shelf most days due to wind/waves. IMO, 27' is borderline for any long, overnight trips, so I would definately spend some $$ on rigging the boat with safety & nav gear (2 gps, 2 sounders, 2 VHF, radar, epirb's) before I spent any more on tackle. I'm sure you will get differing opinions based on what that individual focuses their talent on. Sure hope this helps you in your quest

I have some penn 15's that I use more than anything.

I think your going too big on reels. I use Abbu's 6500 for kings and Penn 310's and a couple of 320's for deep bottom. We also have a Cat with twin 150 Merc's. Invest in outriggers and down riggers. The last time we went out 2 weeks ago we caught most of the fish on ballyhoo on down riggers. Just simple outriggers from the T top make a big difference in your spread. Quality GPS and fish finders are a must.
I need to change my password.
