I don't understand using braided line. I use mono, and then use the same line from my reel to make my leaders.

I like heavy mono for surf fishing, something in the 30-60lbs range. If you are set on braid, I would say something 60-100lbs

I use braid on my spinning reels, mono on the casting. 20# braid will catch anything you can hook.

Most guys use 20lbs braid in the bays, so 40lbs braid for the surf seems right. If you've never used braid you need to put a few yards of mono on the spool before the braid to prevent slippage.

2 of my spinning reels can handle 12LBS test and I use the equivilant diamater for braid. In my case 50LBS. Put a few winds of mono on first. I use a blood knot to tie the braid and mono together. http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/blood-knot

The only problem with braid for surf fishing is that sand can abrade braided line. Keep an eye on your line or use a long leader.
The main advantage for braid is you can dramaticly increase your reel line capacity due to the small size of the line. This is very handy offshore as it allows you to use a smaller lighter reel and still have lots of line. The second advantage is it has near zero stretch, allowing hooksets in very deep water. The smaller size also allows it to sink faster with less weight

+ 1 on braid + fluorocarbon leader, although I like the "Crazy Alberto" knot to join them. Haven't had one slip (yet)

I agree with DayOne, I use 50lb braided line and the bite and hit is almost direct when using a short leader. Do not overfill your reel with braid (leave 1-2mm of the rim of the spool empty) otherwise wind knots will frustrate you when you cast and the leader must be so short that it does not enter the eye on the tip of the rod. For the connection from mono leader to braid I use the albright knot and it has not let met down as yet.
Also. don't forget DayOne's post regarding line abrasion and line care.

Most of my spinning reels are braid, I'm not big on braid and baitcasters.
If you are anywhere where there are shell beds, rocks, or barnacles, a longer mono or Flouro leader is a must, braid will get cut like you hit it with a knife.
I like the Albright knot, but have been using the Slim Beauty knot to connect them recently. Both are good knots.
I use 20 or 30 lb braid with smaller reels, and 50 or 60 lbs on heavy pier/bridge rods.
I also like Magic Braid Dacron from Bass Pro Shops, it is a little thicker and has a break in, but seems to be a little hardier in the lighter tests.

Pferox ties about 30' of mono onto the end of my Magic Braid for me. I haven't mastered the knot yet. The mono gets trimmed over time from use. It took me a while to adjust to the Magic Braid but now I like it.
Spray the braid with Real Magic. It helps it to lay flat and cuts down on wind knots.

Huh?? San Antonio bay is full of oysters, we use braid direct to a jig, no leader because the braid is FAR more resistant to getting cut than mono or fluro carbon. FAR more.
