Should never smell gas in any compartments. Blocking off the rod box is not a fix. You need to find the source of the fumes before it goes BOOM.

If the tank is constructed with cross-linked polyethlene...meaning, if it is a opac colored plastic tank then permeation will occur. Fuel vapors will escape the tank, not the loss of liquid fuel. If inspection shows that no liquid fuel has leaked then this may be your issue. Precautions should included venting compartments, fuel vapors will settle in the lowest point in the boat/compartment. Covered boats will not allow vapors to escape so build up of these vapors is going to happen. Try to avoid letting the boat cover from covering the fuel tank vent if possible. Fuel vapors will migrate to any compartment open to the tank. The smell of fuel vapors does not mean the tank is leaking, but a complete inspection should be performed. Objects stored in compartments will absorbed fuel vapors.

Champions have had a problem with leaking fuel tanks and Yes Jroy. This ethanol is drying out the gaskets for the fuel gauge sender, the fill hose and vent hose are drying out and cracking.
