SPI is a lot more than 1 hr from Corpus. However, anywhere on Padre Island from Port Aransas down to Bob Hall pier is great.

cross the bridge, get onto padre island, drive up to port aransas and enjoy the beach there. it's a pretty nice texas beach and there are miles of it. lots of good sand and you have a good chance of decent water depending on the fronts moving through. if you want something a little more rugged and secluded, 4x4 permitting, just head to PINS and drive down the beach a few miles.

Go to beach road 2 off of 361. You'll be about halfway down Mustang island. Plenty pretty there. Go on down to Port A if the sand is loose.

I'm with Deerstrangler...head North on 361 and take Beach Access Road #2...once you hit the beach, you can turn left or right...your choice.
It should be wide open.
I drive it all the time without 4 wheel...everyone does.
Or if you want to be near more action....drive another 15 minutes to Port Aransas...or the Port A Jetty.
