You guys that run offshore 50 miles, what size catamaran would you consider is safe? I witnessed a 22-24 footer battle some 8-10ft swells coming out of the pass at POC. I was amazed how easily he handled it. What are you guys thoughts on catamarans and a safe length to run offshore. I realize that bigger is better but bigger is more money too. Thanks

I had much rather have a catamaran hull... more stable, comfortable ride, dryer, use less gas.

I have a 25' and would have no problem going out 1/3 of the gas capacity. about 70 miles. It has twin 150 Merc's. Twins are mandatory if your going any distance. It rides high but not too dry. It has a tendency to burp air in front of the boat. My previous boat was a 30' deep V with twin 350 Chevy's. Got about 2 gallons to the mile so we were limited to about 30 miles and used 3 times the gas. I'm very happy with the cat but it takes a while to learn to trim the nose high enough. Speed is excellent.

....those big Cats are nice, but I like my Skeeter as I can take into some skinny water here around Galveston in West Bay and Chocolate and if it looks good head offshore.
...so good it tastes like it died screaming!

Not very practical or safe to go 50 miles offshore in a skeeter. You would be amazed at how shallow my cat can run.

what's your cat draft, steve? like 12-16"? people don't realize how shallow they can draft and run plus the rough water/off shore handling.
