My thoughts exactly! After working at a tackle store and seeing people flock to certain baits or colors I always asked the questioned why, they all catch fish... I have always believed that when a bass is hungry its gonna eat and we just wanna have an excuse to why they dont bite when everything seem to be the ideal situation (moon phase, night or day,etc....) Regardless someone always catches them when the bite is good or not...

Confidence is more important then the color to me. But i try to keep it simple with water melons, pumpkins and black/blue.

I too believe confidence is super important which leads me to believe even more that color isn't as important as some think it is. Confidence equals success because you have enough faith to keep throwing the bait because you know you'll catch fish on it. Ask people what their confidence bait/colors are and you'll get a ton of different answers.

I believe the only thing a color-selector does is show the color that bass can see best in the water where the reading is made. What they can see best may not be what they are inclined to eat in my opinion. Just my opinion, nothing more.

I've seen the effect of color on the catch rate too many times to think color is not important. In the early 2000s, my buddy and I fished Senkos almost exclusively on a lake that was full of large bass. On several occasions, one of us would run out of the color that always caught bass and be forced to use a different color. When that happened, the one of us fishing with the right color would catch five or more fish to every one caught by the one of us without that color. One day after watching him catch five fish to my one for a couple of hours, I finally ask him to give me one of his few remaining Senkos. I couldn't stand it any longer. He gave me one and I immediately started catching as many as he did. That happened enough times to prove to me color can make the difference in catching and not catching.

But, it's not an exact science, and there are probably times when the fish are super active and they will hit any color. I guess that is what makes bass fishing so interesting; we never really figure it all out.

I agree color can make all the difference in plastics, but I caught a ton of crappie and several bass on a specific small crankbait in bluegill for several weeks, and I threw multiple colors and still caught them, so for cranks, in stained water, size and action (and location) seem to be more important than color. None of the colors I threw were shad which is mostly what these fish were eating.

Later in the year I caught crappie and bass in deeper water on a crawfish pattern 6XD. Apparently they could see it better.

Or maybe it was the Hydrowave that just made the fish eat anything in sight. smile

It's one of those things that is really hard to judge. How do you know if you were getting just enough bites to keep you interested that if you had worked up or down the spectrum you would have done better?

I think it depends like most things. If the fish are mean and hungry it probably doesn't matter too much. But if their lockjawed maybe just the right color will get them to bite.

Confidence plays a part in color working or not,but i do beleive it matters to the fish too. Colors like clown and other odd colors would'nt have been as big of a hit9regardless of how long) if they did'nt work but it took a few brave people to fish them and tryoing a new bait/color for the first time it's hard to have alot of ingrained confidence in it. I believe whever possible go with natural colors. it's alot less likely to turn fish off than some gaudy color if it's used alot.
