Hello everyone,

Just moved to the houston area and went fishing a few times and now I can't get enough of it. wanted to know of good places to go around clear lake and east galveston? I have three poles, a light spinning combo, an abu baitcast on a 6'6 medium heavy and a abu baitcast on a 7'6 medium rod. Looking to catch mostly red and black drum and sheephead. Wouldnt mind hooking up on a few flounder or trout. I have tried crab and shrimp with little luck. any help would be appreciated.

You can catch black drum using fishbites. Reds using mullet live, dead or cut. Reds also like ladyfish pieces. Sheesphead use fresh dead shrimp. Trout would be best caught using live shrimp on a floater or freeline.

....welcome to the area "Papa33". If you are planning on hitting Toddville early I would recommend using a topwater such as a Super Spook in a dark color right at and before daylight and then switch over to something else. Fish the piers on the tide and work slowly as there a ton of flatties up there.

...so good it tastes like it died screaming!

preciate the advice! I dont have a topwater so I will go pick one up. As far as the flatties go, what is the best way to catch them? I have never caught any. Also I am planning on using my cast net I bought to go after some mullet for reds and got some blue crab for black drum. Looking for any wisdom that would help me fill my cooler.

Well I went out to seabrook and only caught one 3 pound gaftop that i threw back. I could use some pointers if anyone wants to chime in. I used the super spook jr. in the black shad color just before sunrise and did not get one bite. I fished right off the bridge on toddville with everything from crab, shrimp and live and dead mullet and nothing was working. Caught the gaftop on a piece of cut up mullet. Can anyone tell me of a place that is not to far from seabrook that I would be able to catch some reds, black drum sheephead and maybe a few flounder?

Since I live in Galveston, I decided a year ago to get serious about saltwater fishing. I do not have a boat, I do not like the pay to fish piers. I bought wade gear.
Most of my Info, i got from here.I was a bass fisherman for years on Sam Rayburn and Toledo bend and many other lakes.
Big difference from fresh to salt...TIDE...TIDE ...TIDE.
I catch all my fish on artificial, gulp live mostly, in the 3 inch new penny shrimp.
I still have not figured out the tides. So far this year I have fished the same place 63 times.
On high tide i catch most.
I have fished low tide and caught limits.
I have fished high tide and caught zip.
I have fished low tide and caught zip.
I have fished high tide and caught limits.
Hers a good link for the tides where we are.

hope it helps

it's all about reading the water and where to catch more fish and certain species.

Reds.. mostly shallow with mud and shell
Trout... from 2'deep to deeper over shell and mud shell mix
Flounder cuts with current ...larger cuts are better right now and closer to the gulf even better.

live bait is great, but certainly not going to work unless you search for the signs of feeding fish.. look for baitfish, shrimp acting nervous.... as if jaws was around.. birds, and slicks.

a lot of people have caught their first limits with our videos and we offer a money back guarantee.

Ok I looked at the tides from that website, but I am not sure what I am looking for? I got to toddville right at 6 so I think I was there on both high and low tide because I stayed until 1. Also I tried all the different rigs that redking09 suggested and still was not able to catch anything but that small gafftop.

As a few here have commented, fish a moving tide. Incoming is generally better than outgoing. But an outgoing tide can be very good if fishing around a marshy area holding bait fish and shrimp that can be washed out into open water by the tide. The greater the change in height between high and low, the more movement of water, the better the fishing.

Bait in the water is equally important. If there is no bait to be seen in the water the chances are there are not many predator fish to catch. Nervous bait is even better. Polarizing glasses will be invaluable to help you see the bait in the water.

For bait it is hard to beat shrimp (live or dead) or fingerling mullet, fished on bottom or under a cork. Cut larger mullet or ladyfish, fished on bottom. I personally never had much luck using crab in the bays (in the surf or around jetties yes, but not the bay).

Follow other good comments here on using top water baits in calm water, and soft plastics bounced on bottom or under popping cork.

You might look at expanding your fishing area little bit more, and check out getting a wade belt. Good Luck!
