I am headed to austin the 27-28 for a job interview and since it is only gonna take an hour or so gonna bring my fly gear with me. Never fishing anywhere in Hill Country before. Any recommendations on where to check out (not looking for honey holes, just ideas). Or anyone from the forum wanna meet up and fling some bugs?

San Gabriel River offers easy access right of 35 in Georgetown, I hear its fishing good lately, and it's pretty water to boot.

I second Brushy. I'll PM you with some details on where to fish. I'd love to meet up with ya, but I'm gonna have to watch the UT game at 11.

If you can pack a float tube, hit the San Marcos right at the head water and float to the public park with the man made kayak
chute. 3? miles?
there is even a shuttle service to take you back up. just do your home work, not much bank fishing tho

Also the Blanco, under I 35, just N of San Marcos, has a decent stretch of wadeable bank access

The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

Thanks for the tips everyone, I'm putting a map together this week.

Unfortunately I left the float tube at my dad's house so only gonna be able to bring the 5wt 8wt and waders

Also plan on stopping by Living Waters Fly Shop, any other places I need to check out?

Sportsman's Finest, on the west side of Austin is a great fly and gun shop. Their store people are very knowledgeable, and can help you out with where to go, sell you some flies, and set you up with a guide if that is what you want.

Go here http://www.mockayaks.com/rental-info-i-59.html?OBNsid=33df45c05f7e9a97301b7a8e095d809f cool little half day trip if you just float to Canoe Camp. Rental includes shuttle, and they have guided trips available too.

It's more than the catfish would do.

I've floated the CO from MOC before with a group - nice river, lots of LMB and Guadalupe Bass and Gar (if you're into that) ... Nice way to get some solitude for the day and wrap it all up with some big city Austin high-life. J.

You can rent a kayak for the day at in San Marcos. I use to live on the river and seen many many people fly fishing. If you decide to go to SM pm me and I'll give you the places to put in at.
