Like the title says, we'll be down there. I got the ok to brig some fishing stuff, but I have no idea what to take. Figure I'd be fishing from the shore, and I thought a few of y'all go down there pretty regularly and could give a little advice.

Head down to the jetties with a lemon rig and some live shrimp.

Cracked crab or cut mullet off the south jetty will work too.

Would I need a leader on that or would 30lb mono be enough? I'm on google earth right now figuring it out, thanks! I don't have any serious saltwater stuff, but I figure my catfish rods would do everything I need. Are there bait shops everywhere down there or do yall have any recommendations on that.

Use a 50lb mono leader. Woodys sports center or Port A outfitters will have everything you need.

How's that Packery Channel, I was thinking since I probably wont go to the North Jetty, if the south is packed full of people I might head over there and check it out. I'm kind of thinking since it'll be Thanksgiving weekend there shouldn't be a ton of people, but I could be totally wrong.

We were there at thanksgiving a few years ago. We bought some finger mullet and went out on the pier in the evening and fished the second gut with cut mullet on the bottom with a three way rig and caught black drum swimming thru and some nice size whiting. You might hook a red also.

Packery will probably be busier with locals from Corpus since its closer to town. I think it's too shallow. The South Jetty is over a mile long. I'm sure you'll find a spot. Deep water on the channel side.

I think you're getting the Port A and Packery Jetties confused.

The Port A south jetty is about 2/3 miles long while the Packery south jetty is about 1/4 mile long.

Can you sneak your kayak down? Are you just interested in surf/jetty fishing?

I wish I could bring my yak, we're going to the UT/TCU game in Austin with the wife's family then heading down there to meet mine, just don't feel comfortable leaving it ontop of the ride there in Austin for a while.

I kind of want to catch some reds but I've been looking at YouTube videos from down there and think I may need to borrow alittle more serious rods than what I have. Atleast on the jetties. Might try and catch something for a Thanksgiving meal while we're there, that'd be cool.

Nope not confused. The south jetty is 8600 feet long. It may on go beyond the beach 2/3rds of a mile but that's not the whole jetty. Been hanging out down there every summer for 35 years.

See I figured the south jetty at Port A was the one everyone went to especially all the visitors. Is it not busy down there during Thanksgiving?

There are a lot of snow birds that time of the year. I may be in Rockport Thanksgiving depending on the weather.

If you're looking for wading the bay Bird Island Basin is a good choice that year. The bay side of Packery too.

I think wading might open up a whole nother can of worms. I'm trying to figure what all I'll be able to bring, something is telling me the wife isn't going to want to drive down there in a 4runner full of fishing gear.

If you have a decent block of time and want to get away from the crowds, take the boat over to the North Jetty from Fishermans Wharf...Some of the best rock/jetty fishing in the US... Bring a rolling cooler but understand that if you wanna go out to the end where people sometimes catch sailfish, you'll have to just leave it behind at some point... When I go I use a back pack as a tackle box....
