Broke a piece out of the fin below the prop on my Merc 200. What will it take to get it fixed? attached is a picture of what it looks like (kinda).

Yes it can. What they'll do is break the rest of the keel off then weld you on a new one. Then, they will paint it black for you. It's not very expensive either.... maybe $60-$70
Good Luck

Thanks.
I actually illustrated it wrong, the break is on the front side. I figured that is all it would take. How common of a problem is this? I've seen it on a few other "old" boats.

I've had several fixed, the last one was on a 150 Mercury and it ran $150. Very common problem, aluminum and the lowest thing sticking down under a motor.

The skeg is actually designed to to wear away and break to prevent upper end damage. This is apparently more common in salt water enviroments. I watch them do that repair on the boat show hosted by OLN.

Buy a Skeg Gard, it's a stainless slip on cover. Check out cabelas and bass pro. Do it yoursels install and comparable to weld jobs in price.
It doesn't matter how you find the pot of gold, all that matters is that you beat the leprachaun.

I did the same thing on a 200 EFI, I put on the skeg guard and it was about $125.00.
One thing to keep in mind, if you are into speed, the guard will drop your top end 3-4 MPH. If you are looking for top end, go get it welded, if you want max speed

Also since the skeg guard is stainless steel it will make the bigger more expensive parts break instead of the lower cost alum skeg. The reason it breaks easily is so it acts like a fuse. It dies not the rest of your lower unit! Just a thought!
I feel more like I do now than I did when I first got here!
