Growing up, my grandfather William Laird tested soft and hard baits for a number of bait manufacturers. Some I still see on the market, and others never made it!
He would document water temp / color / depth and fish length / weight / etc... He taught me everything I know about bass fishing, and needless to say, I've seen a number of WEIRD creature baits that never made it to market. Still have some of them!
I'm interested in doing this myself. Do any of you know of bait companies public or private that need people to test their products?
