I think you just answered your first question...

There are days the fish will eat a Popper and days they want a Spook better. Then there are other days they won't hit a topwater at all. After the second fish "drove by" your plug but didn't take it, you should have been throwing another type of bait at em. My guess is that if you had thrown the Spook after the 2nd fish did the the drive by you would have had different results and you might be on here showing us a pic of your first Spook fish rather than asking why the fish kept missing your popper repeatedly. blush

Too many times we think we can MAKE the fish eat a lure. Let them tell you what they want. Every fish you catch should tell you how to catch the next one. I am guilty of this too. The guys that know when to make the adjustments are the ones that consistently catch em. wink

I can agree with that. Only problem is, I'm still learning to speak LMB, so it all sounds like bloop bloop bloop to me at the moment.

I might not catch them all, but I try to.

I have this happen when my popper is setting still too.

If the fish completely misses the popper (doesn't taste the metal). Start "walking" the popper immediately. I use the Excalibur "Pop'n Image" with a Rapala Knot with 20 lb mono. With the Rapala Knot, and the small cup on the mouth of the Pop'n Image, you can walk the popper.

I think if the fish misses the bait and you start walking it quickly away from where the fish "blew up" you trigger a follow up strike because they think the injured baitfish is trying to get away.

It doesn't always work, but it works often enough for me to keep trying it.

Use mono for poppers and braid for spooks. Dont set the hook on the popper. Just let the fish take it then reel/drag ur rod to the side. On the spook let the fish take it down then set the hook to the side like a spinner bait. make sure u feel the fish before to set the hook

You might also try putting some sort of scent on your popper to draw them in and make them hang on. Be careful with what you use and remember to clean your bait after you are done fishing with it. Some stuff creates a sticky coat and can cause the bait to turn yellow.

I sure miss the stump dodging on Lake Fork...But I'm coming back soon to catchOVER the slot! 👍🏾

Had an older guy at work tell me that also, "Son, just put a little stank on it and they'll whoop it."

I might not catch them all, but I try to.

With regard to learning to speak LMB...

Have a rod rigged up with a weightless watermelon fluke to throw immediately at the fish when they miss you topwater. Throw it to the spot where they swirled and 70% of the time they will eat it.

this, although i like a shad colored fluke most of the time in that scenario, but that varies by lake and personal confidence too.
