ok...i admit it i am hard headed..and usually go thru life learning stuff the hard way! Well it hit me like a ton of bricks today! Up untill now my crappie career has had visible structure..or if i found a spot...i caught a good amount of fish had fun never thought about coming back! Let me cut to the chase...i need gps...it dawned on me today...once i pull that buoy out tha water..its as if i never been ther before! I know the bigger units got it..and thats what i plan to save for...but meanwhile..what about a hand held garmin or something....no iphone so no navionics...can you mark waypoints on other units like the garmins? And are the effective? Does anyone out there do this? Any suggestions? I cant keep throwing all that work away!

One of my friends went out today. His old, low end fish finder finally bit the dust. He was able to find some fish using only his hand held gps and stored waypoints. I'm saving for a higher end combo unit also. But a hand held gps is a less expensive help in the meantime.

The garmin rino series are awesome. I have GPS on both of my fishfinders, 2 humminbird 898s but still prefer to use my handheld to locate the brushpiles.
COMING SOON! .. THE STICKLE HOOK " the stay level sickle hook". sits level in the water with all knots.! Provides better hook sets and more natural jigging motion. No more adjusting the knot, gluing , or tying loop knots that cause the hook point to tangle in the loop, or worse knick the line.. The jighook that will make all others obsolete !

Hand held units work fine. I have a H2O that I have had for years. Even though my boat has two combo units I still take the hand held with me when fishing in someone else's boat so I can find my stuff.
The biggest drawback to handheld units is Batteries and brackets. Get a power cord that attached directly to the battery or a cig. lighter socket. Ram makes a holding bracket for the Lowrance and probably the others as well. Forget color units, finding waypoints is what's important and the hand held's work just as good as the more expensive options.

Only comment is if you are a hunter too and need or could use a mapping unit, but then you'll spend about what you could on a gps enabled color fish finder. But you would have a dual purpose unit.
Like Ernest said above, if you just need the waypoint, and you have a depth finder already, get a cheap one, but look for one that will run off of a cigarette lighter power if your boat has it. Otherwise, newer handheld units with lithium batteries have 16 hours or more run time. Turning it on and off as needed, will make it last quite a while. I have Garmins for I use for hunting and I've been please with them. Both have mapping capabilities.

I use Navionics on my Iphone, and I have tons of spots marked on many lakes.... Plus it gives you all the Navionics depth info etc.
