I've got a 1996 Evinrude 115hp that I bought used. Had it checked by a mechanic and everything seems in good order. It will start fine at the house hooked up to a hose but when I put it in the water it will not start unless I give it 1/2 to full throttle, even after I've run it all day. It also tends to die at idle. I've turned up the idle which helped that some. Any ideas what could be the problem?
Thanks

It sounds like you are putting the idle exhaust relief ports under water... If the engine is sitting real low in the water and the ports are under water you could have starting and idle problems... Two hole's right below the cowl on the back of the engine... It starts at your house because there is no back pressure on the exhaust....

Fuel mixture richens with motor in the water. Caused by exhaust back-pressure. I have seen this caused by a carb bleeding fuel, choke solinoid leaking, fowled spark-plugs or you could have 1 cylinder not hitting from bad coil or power-pack. Yes can be a head gasket. Was compression checked before purchase?

I don't think this is the case but I'll double check next time I'm out. Thanks

Was compression checked before purchase? Compression is fine. Is there an easy way to check the other possible causes you listed? I don't have much experience working on motors so unless it's an easy check I guess I'll just need to take it in for service. Thanks

Sounds like you need to take it to a boat mechanic. Sorry
