I'm new to kayak fishing, taking a little to get use to it. Normally run from one end of the lake to the other in my bass boat. Can't really do that in a kayak. At least not a old out of shape individual! Can anyone tell me of a nice little lake with decent fishing (bass) 1 to 1 1/2 hr from the Houston area. I've tried Raven, Sheldon, Houston, Conroe and Naconiche. I really liked Naconiche, just a little far for a day trip. Any suggestions?

If work was as much fun as fishing, I'd LOVE my job!

I've been looking at this one on google earth. Looks shallow, pretty good lake? On the TPWD site, looks like more of a crappie/catfish lake?

Dam B is shallow. I remember as a teen water skiing and dropping off in the middle of the lake and finding myself standing in 5' of water. I ran it every day for weeks in the summer in my jonboat.

I would fish the Neches above the lake, at least some. And there is a long cove that cuts through the middle of the part of the park that was called Henhouse Ridge. Back in the back it was always very clear. I think it was called Gum Slough.

I've fished there many times and I think it's a great all around lake. Crappie and cats are what most people go after, but there are plenty of nice bass to be caught, too. Most folks don't fish for them because they can't get to them in their powered boats. It also has a large red breasted sunfish population.

It is shallow and it can get rough quick in a storm. Like B.A. said, the south end by the dam is very shallow. I've had to walk my flat bottom across the hump a few times to get to the dam. Stay north of the bridge. Put in at Martin Dies park. Follow the kayak trail on the east side (north of the park) to open water. From there you can access the Angelina and Neches rivers and miles of interconnected back water and hidden lakes. And remember Big Sam is just above Dam B on the Angelina so keep an eye out for rising water...oh yeah, and GATORS!

I really appreciate all the advice and information. Maybe I'll see some of you out there. I'll be the bald headed guy in a PA 12 or OK Big game.
Thanks again
Scott

Lake Woodlands is perfect for a kayak, it's a pretty shallow lake but there are a lot of crappie, bass and catfish in there. There is also a nice boat ramp at northshore park.
