A buddy sent this to me today, he took the pic on Estes. I was wade fishing in front on the lighthouse last year with my son and a school swam through us took awhile to unpucker..

Awesome picture!
Those are cownose rays. They will school up like that in massive schools and cruise the bays and surf at different times of the year.
They don't have a barb or "stinger" at all like other sting rays. They are actually harmless.
They also make one of the finest shark baits!

Cownose do have a barb and will use it when threatened. Normally they are swimming which makes it difficult to step on them though. They usually don't bury up on bottom like the Atlantic ray. Great pic!

Barb or not when you are waste deep in the water a big school swims by you it will give you a scare..

Great pic! Thanks for the correction! I just looked it up and you are 100% correct. I thought they were like skates and didn't have a barb. I use them all the time for shark bait! I will be more careful with them from now on!
