Academy has Abu Garcia Blue Max rod/reel combos for $39.00 right now. My son has 2 and loves them.
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know when to go fishing.

Academy has the Revo STX on Sale for 99.95 and you could pick up a falcon HD Rod for 69.95 would be a great deal IMO.

Welcome BGreen71!
If your fishing ponds, creeks, and from the bank, I would keep my rod(s) around the 6'6" length and easy to maneuver. Call Dave Settle at Custom Angle Rods (903) 440-0044 on Lake Fork and tell him what your using the rod for. He hand makes the most versatile rods I've ever used. Super good man! H2O rods are good and the Abu Garcia Vendetta or Veritas will work for you as well.
There's a handful of reels that will suit your needs: Academy Mettle, Lew's Speed Spool, Bass Pro CarbonLite (very light) to mention a few.
Tightlines to you.
