So i Was throwin the net for some shad at a local pond and landed this small carp, everything seemed normal just a unlucky fish in the wrong spot at the wrong time, then I realized his tail..... He looked deformed with no visible cuts or bite marks does anyone know what could have caused this??

The scale pattern is referred to as a mirror carp. They are a bit of a prize fish. As for the shape, could be a number of things. But ultimately, at some point he got his spine broken and it healed.

That has to be the most bizarre mirror I have ever seen.
FYI, it took me 20 years to catch a mirror.
I tend to over think fishing. Please help me. When I am over complicating something please kick me in the face. Hard.

Deformed Fantail Mirror, if it was from a small pond it's likely due to stunting.

Deformed Fantail Mirror, if it was from a small pond it's likely due to stunting. yeah, also could be bait fish released they are supposed to be sterile but we all know how that goes...they spawn and the off spring are not 100% right because of the previous attempt to sterilize the fish. or it could just be a wound from a cormorant.

Biggest likelyhood is damaged during very young age. A lot of carp fry get damaged and do not survive., this one did

Kinda creeped me out lol but he appeared to have full mobility of it so I guess it's not bugging him too much if he's grown that much already
