Lots of us on this forum have caught stripers on the fly. Not sure what you mean by big, but I've caught stripers up to nine pounds this year on flies.

See the link below for a story about a friend of mine who caught a 30+ lb striper while fishing for trout with a five weight fly rod:

http://www.grtu.org/newsletters/2004-October-GRTU-Newsletter.pdf

His picture is on the front page of the newsletter and his story on pages 10-11.

Thats crazy!I dont think this fish was that big but I was using a 5 also.it just bent my hook and kept on chugging.I was below granbury. This was the 4th one ive either broke off or hook pulled or hook straightened. Thanks for sharing that.Ill bet nobody has caught one over twenty lbs here in texas on fly.

Dude, this is a texas fly forum, we generally talk about weird events like hooking a surprise bream or the teeny tiny rogue sand bass while we're catch our normal and boring 9 - 14 lb stripers.

(unless of course, you want to include the carp club boys, cause then we have to edit our mentions of non traditional plastic, foam, softbodies and glow in the dark flies)

[censored], I just mentioned them.

The ONLY reason to fish with a fly rod in Texas
is to throw a POPPER, casting any other type fly just means you're doing something.

You know better than that, Casey.

Give me a 2 weight and I'll straighten any hook you can throw at me. (Ok I'll have to stop it at the 5/0 range, some of those shark hooks are THICK).

There are some big ones below DeCordova Dam. I fish there with a 6 wt at least and sometimes an 8 wt. I can tell you that if you are straightening the hooks, then you need bigger hooks. I use hooks bigger than a 4 if I am after the strippers below any tailwater in Texas.

Good to know they are releasing water on the Brazos. Were there alot of buzzards down there? Seems like everytime I go there is a TV convention.

I'm just guessing they are striper.Maybe gar.I'm straightening hooks by barring down on the fish when it takes all my dang line I'm afraid I'll lose it all.Seems like some on here don't believe me?

State fly rod record for a striper is over 36 lbs, caught by John Erskine. Here is a link to his picture and story:

http://faroutfishingtrips.com/blog/?p=86

It was caught in the same pool where Jeff was fishing in the story above, but two years later. This spring TPWD shocked up five stripers between 28 and 40 lbs in the same pool and took them in to use as brood stock.

Man....we chase stripers here on the fly all the time!! Our average used to be around 15-20lbs, but with water conditions going in the crapper, stripers are hard to come by these days!! Our state record is 54lbs I believe.....or close to it. They sure are fun on a long rod though!!!!

God does not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent fishing.
