Looking at getting a new setup for my upcoming trip to LMF...I am a beginner fly fisherman, but experienced fisherman...lakes, inshore mostly. i currently have a scientific angler 5/6 (thats whats on the rod) combo that i bought at sportsmans wharehouse when they went out of business. not sure of the line type.....im a believer in quality gear will enhance your experience....that said i was looking at the orvis clearwater series, 5 wt 8.5 combo with case $189.....or cabelas RLS outfit.....any thoughts or advice? or anything for sale?

The Scientific Anglers rod and reel are fine items. You might just look at investing in a really high quality fly line. That's my opinion.

I will second the fly line recommendation. I'm a fan of the Scientific Angler GPX and Orvis Wonderline as being good value. Someone recently told Orvis Wonderline is just Rio re-branded, but I don't buy it. Rio isn't all that bad either. Anyhow, if you are going to try and save money somewhere, don't let it be on the fly-line. The streams are full of beginners casting a shiny new $500 rod with a $300 reel hanging off it wound with $15 fly line. They will usually be cursing the world and having no fun.

I bough that same Cabela's Orvis Clearwater 5 weight this summer and love it. It's become somewhat of my beater kayak rod as it chips easily and the cork has lost a few chunks, but it casts like a laser. I have a Lamson Konic on it.

your not a trout fisherman unless you have a Hardy Perfect Trout Reel, preferably 3 1/8" model. For the rod you will need the Hardy CC de France and match it up with a nice Silk Fly Line. You should be good to go for Broken Bow hatchery stokers. Don't forget that with this outfit you will catch more fish than anyone on the river. Enjoy.

And if you believe all of that, I have a bridge to sell you...

Of the brands you mentioned, Orvis has the best overall quality and value for the money, and they stand behind their products. They also tend to come out with new rod and reel models frequently, so you can often get good deals on their discontinued models, which are often 30-40% off.

Fine, you don't have to have hardy gear, but you do need at least 10,000 post before you know anything about trout fishing.
