i dont own a kayak but have been looking into them. only problem is i have no clue whats good, whats not good, what all i need and how much something decent with what i need will cost me. im also trying to get a bass boat around december january and was wondering if i should just wait and save my money towards that. i dont like fishing alone and dont know anyone else with Kayaks to fish with. my girlfriend isnt cordinated enough for me to try and get her one and i figure the cost of getting 2 would be a lot more money then its worth. thanks -Robert

Lots of people to tag along with. And no matter what type of fish you Target. I rarely go out on my own. As for yaks I will let the more familiar guys answer that. I have a pescador from acadamy and it gets the job done. Suggest the grapevine GTG you can paddle different yaks and see if you like it.

Define your needs and your budget. Sit-inside or sit-on-top? For just paddling around or some serious fishing?

Do a lot of reading. There are many kayak sites and product reviews out there. Talk to qualified people and kayak users. Go paddle some around on demo days.

Just remember that a kayak is a boat, and BOAT means "Break Out Another Thousand". Throw in a new bass boat, and you can spend a lot of money on accessories and boat bling.

I bought a Native Ultimate 14.5 Tandem a few months ago, and read up on kayaks, rigging, accessories, reviews, etc., for a year.

I agree with the above. Come out to the GTG on the 29th of the month. There will be tons of folks out their with all kinds of yaks paddle or pedal a few and see how you like kayaking before you make a call. I started with a bass boat and when I started kayak angling I foubd it much more exciting. I look forward to seeing you.

well if i do get a bass boat it will be used, older, and most likely a 16-17 foot with a 50-90 horse motor just like my old skeeter ss90. I was just looking for something to bass fish in if i get bored and wanna hop in a pond or a small lake. i also know that expensive dosnt always mean the best. i dont wanna get caught up spending a thousand dollors to find out i couldve got something just as good for half the price lol

Lots of used kayaks on sale at www.texaskayakfisherman.com and on Craig's List. That might be the best way to figure out if you'd really like one without spending a ton of money.

I love your "SCIENCE" signature image Tallgrass. That's awesome.

Your best bet is to follow The Slad's advice and come out to the get together on Grapevine Saturday after next. There will be plenty of kayaks there to try out plus kayaks already rigged out for fishing so you can see the possibilities. We are a friendly group. Step up and say hello and we will be happy to answer any questions. If you decide to buy, finding someone to share the water with shouldn't be a problem. There are open invites posted here all the time.

Many tandem kayaks can be set up for one paddler, so that may be an option for you ... you two could paddle together or you could use it solo when she can't make it out to join you.

Also, there is a group of us (sometimes large, sometimes small) that gets together every Thursday after work at Murrell Park on Lake Grapevine for some laid back fishing. Usually fish from 6 - 9. We'd love to have you join us. I currently have a spare yak sitting in the garage, so with a little notice, I could throw it in the truck for you to use if you want to join us before you get your own.
