Am considering the purchase of my first color locator.
I want a unit that replicates the operation of my Lowrance Mark 5X. By that I mean that I want a color sonar.
Side imaging, down imaging, rear imaging, front imaging and up imaging are way above my understanding level. I am looking at the Lowrance Elite 5x. It is in My price range and appears to be very user friendly. Am I on the right track or not ?

I have a Mark 5x and im not to happy with it. I can't get the noise out of it and it shows fish all the time, even when I dont think there are fish below me. I just use it as a depth finder. I have yet to see anything thats as good as the old paper graphs, as for as sharpness of the screen. The new graph screens just look smudged or fuzzy to me.

I would take a good look at the Humminbird 500 Series alot of features for the money.

Are you wanting GPS Mapping? Look at the 596 and 597 models. Yo usaid you didn't want DI model but Humminbird DI models come with 2D Sonar also and imaging sonar makes it alot easier to understand and this might be an easier transition since you have both with Humminbird. Just an idea. If you have any questions on the Humminbird feel free to ask and I will try to help.

To all,
Thanks a lot for the information.
I have chosen a used Lowrance X-510C for my venture into color sonar.
The price was right and I am confident that the seller is being honest with me when he says the unit works as it's supposed to.
I realize that this is a discontinued model and no longer serviced by Lowrance but I am hopeful that this unit will be a good introduction to the world of color.
Again, thanks for the input.
J.B.

Congrats! If you ever have any questions in the future let me know...Here to help.

Color sonar really makes it easy to see the differences in strength of returns.
