Last weekend was the first trip in awhile I didn't catch one. I've been catching sliders and soft shells like its my job.

I fish maize on a hair rig almost exclusively and I get my corn picked off in heavy turtle areas but I have never caught one on lake austin or lady bird. With sweet flavored baits we are carp and buff 200 catfish and turtles 0.Just the facts.

Been catching tons of soft shells at ponds. Didn't have any issue at White Rock last weekend.
As the nights cool off they'll become less and less of an issue till we get those blessed 3 or 4 months of turtle-free carping.

We need to crossbreed your turtles here. Ours still have their sweet tooth

The sweet flavors mainly keep from getting catfish bites the turtles will still pick it off but we have never hooked one.I have caught a turtle using a breadball rolled up the size of a boillie and hung on my hairrig. We use this setup to catch catish at my neighborhodd lake. Some of the more experienced fisherman use unscented plastic corn which the turtles will bite less I hear. Also though I fish areas that have quite a few turtles I cast out to water depths over 15' deep at many but not all swims to make the turtles work hard to get to my bait.

Using a hairrig and a boillie shaped breadball at my neighborhood lake my son and I have a contest ooccasionally to see how long it takes to catch a catfish.Quite often we catch nice 2-3lbs cats in less than 30 seconds. We also caught a turtle.I think maybe the shape of a boillie may increase the chances a bit of actually hooking a turtle but not for sure.On ladybird and lake austin we fish the same swims everybody else does.We see people fishing next to us catching bass perch catfish turtles.Since 2011 summer here is what we have caught.carp and buff over 200,perch 1,catfish 0. turtles 0,bass 0. Maybe we have been lucky but sometimes the turtles pick off my corn and I have to cast to a different area. Most were on pineapple but we have tested juicy tutti fruity and peach lately with the same results.

Do you use popups? I think I catch more turtles using popups, especially those that are a few inches off the bottom. I think it keeps them from really being able to pull on the bait. Half the time I catch turtles they are hooked in the mouth. The other half they are usually hooked through the front foot.

Nick Ihave had have a whole assortment of bouyant plastic corn for the last couple of months. We havent used it but would like to try them.I would add that in general we use a #6 hook but have used #4 and #8 also.I would have to think that if we put our corn dirrectly on the hook we would have banked some turtles. The hairig is a beautful thing and so fish friendly. Never had a gut hook.
