I am looking to buy one of these yaks but can not decide. They look very much alike to a Yak Newbie like me. Please give me your expert advice. It will be used mostly for small lakes, ponds and semi calm rivers, creeks etc... I have demo tested the Ascend 12 but not the Heritage. I have heard that the Heritage is the way to go. Your thoughts PLEASE.Thanks,
Bill
I swear I caught so many fish that the water level went down!

Well I had a long response written, hit the wrong button and lost it lol. IMO the Redfish hands down. The Redfish is now a Native Watercraft boat, not a Heritage. I own a Redfish 12 so I know of what I speak. Great 12 footer, stable, tracks great, paddles great. The short story on the Ascend...they warp, floors and hull. You can't go wrong with the Redfish.

Uh oh its my clone! LOL Since you have test paddled the Ascend the biggest difference between the two will be stability and efficiency (ie speed). The Redfish is a more stable yak, but with the better stability you're going to trade off some of that speed. The Redfish is also slightly more maneuverable and has a shallower draft than the Ascend, which is something I would want in a river yak. Personally, I like the layout of the Redfish better, mainly because it has adjustable foot pegs and flat floor that could allow you to stand and fish. You're not going to go wrong with either choice.

Can't comment on the Ascend but I too own a Native Watercraft Redfish 12. It's my first yak so I don't really have much to compare to. But I can tell you that I've been very happy with mine. Tracks well, very stable, great layout & the foot pegs are a plus. If you're planning on being at the GTG at GV on 9/29, you're more than welcome to take mine out for a test run. Just look for the orange Gator Bait

Thanks For everyones help.. You have kinda swayed me towards a redfish.I am looking for stability over speed and I do like the adjustable pegs and flat floor. Okay Gone-fishing your right, you were here first. I will start all of my post with NOT gone-fishinG.. lol

Use our comments for reference points only. You never know which you'll like better. Only way to tell is with trial runs.

I know the FS-12T had issues with the bottom of the boat warping. Personally I think it was because of the TINY scupper holes and their limited number. Didn't break up the surface enough with rigid structure to prevent that.
As an FS12T owner that's my only real complaint.
The boats fine in the stability, speed, space categories.
I think the real benefit of the Native is the relationship you get with the dealer. Once you burn those points from your baspro member card then your benefit is generally 0. You're not going to get any "purchased a boat" pricing. You're not going to get that personal service level above and beyond.

You are looking at some OK boats...but...before you make a final decision, I want to invite you to our store to have a hands-on inspection of several other options that would be good consideratons: Wilderness Systems Tarpons (120, 140 & 160), Perception Truimph 130, Perception Destiny 120, Manta Ray 11 & 14, and last but not least, the Hobie Quest 11 & 13.
Most of the above mentioned kayaks are new 2012's and come with great end of year pricing. Why not have a comfortable, well outfitted top of the line kayak instead of something that is just OK?
