I am trying to remove the top cap? on a tilt trim unit so I can replace the O rings and seals as it is leaking around the tilt rod. I have a pin wrench/tool but the cap is not turning and the tool is slipping out of the pin holes and I am thinking I might damage the holes that are in the cap. Is there a solution for this,is there a shop that will remove this for me? Last year I called several area marine shops to see about repairing this and none would touch it I assume (and sometimes that is a bad thing to do) is they want to sell a new one at the cost of over &1000.00 + install, this is on a 1991 evinrude 40hp. The unit is still attached to the motor at the base I was able to remove the Pin at the top but thinking to leave it attached to the base so as to have a solid hold. Thanks in advance. Tom H I live in the Fort Worth area.

We just did a reseal on that exact motor. Remove the unit completely and put it in a vice. We have a special tool that is made especially for the cap removal, You may want to invest in one. Other wise you may just want to make one. Either way, the outcome is the same. You can also use a blunt, round punch and a hammer, the damage that you will incure is minimual and will not result in anything other than visual. Or you can use a pair of 4inch channel locks or a pipe wrench, Either of these will result in superficial damage and should not effect the outcome. Use it with caution and do not grip the tube, only grip the cap. Words of caution......inspect and reinspect the shaft of the plunger. If there is any damage it has to either be replaced of polished out. Otherwise no seal will be of any benefit.
