Chunk a 1/8 oz or smaller spoon in the surf...Whiting killer! When I was younger, I thought they were baby reds.

I thought they were baby reds as well. They are good. On those party boats we would take our whiting to a local restaraunt and get them fried up. Excellent.

I fish for Whiting most every day at the SPI Jetty since I'm staying in Port Isabel now until March. I use "FishBites" and they just love 'em. Brought 16 big ones home yesterday. They are easier to fillet than Reds or Black Drum and cook up quicker. There's a lot of meat on a Whiting, compared to other fish their size, due to their small head and triangular body. Mmmmm good!! fish

FL-Fishlady, I have not used fishbites before. Are they the ones that come in the strips and you cut off a piece? If so, how much do you cut off and do you go thru the hook once or thread the peice on the hook a couple of times?....By the way, whiting is fun on light tackle as mentioned.

I only get a chance to go to the coast once every couple of years for a day or two. I always target whiting and croaker as they are my favorite fish both to catch and to eat. With no limit on them, and their ease to catch, I can catch as many as I want an bring a whole bunch of them back home with me to cook up.

Croakers and Whiting are what I call panfish of the sea. Fun to catch on light gear and great in the skillet.

M Squared, Yes, FishBites come in a blue & white package as two strips 12" long and 1/2" wide. Comes in 4 different colors: pink, orange, white and chartreuse. They also come in two scents: crab and shrimp. I like the shrimp flavor best. I've purchased them at H.E.B.s in Port Isabel, Raymondville, and Corpus area. Not all H.E.B.s have them only the ones that sell fishing epuipment. The price is usually $5.67. With scissors I cut mine in 1" pieces and put them in a medicine bottle with a screw top. It is way easier to open and close a bottle than that zip lock bag it comes in and it will stay fresher longer too. fish

I usually start by fishing for the big three game fish. But if they aren't biting, then I will bring out the light gear and start fishing for whiting and croakers. It is always better to catch something, instead of nothing. I also agree with everyone else here, they are both good eating. Recently we have started to bake them whole. Very good!
