Very cool snakes. Fortunately you got to see him under those circumstances. Very cool to let him go about his way.

A rare and beautiful snake.
You are very lucky to see that one.
I believe many herpetologists might go years or longer trying to find one of those in the wild- and no of course do not kill rare beautiful things like that for no reason- you did good.

I'm glad I have not run across one of those fellers recently. Really nice pics though.

They ar every common on my old deer lease in bowie county. I was out there visiting some remaining members last weekend and they spotted 3 in camp that weekend.

All non-venomous snakes are free to eat and live around me. Protected or not that would die. I'm more about protecting me than a snake that can do me harm. And I will remember not to post photos if I ever do run into one.

Pacific rattler in California is one potent snake as well.

I've handled more timber rattlers (while in college at WVU) than I care to remember. Have seen 5 different coloration/patterns. Never been bitten. Also did a survey of massasaga rattlers (Sistrurus catenatus) in central Illinois one summer at Robert Allerton Park near Monticello, IL. Talk about a placid rattlesnake, these were. Takes a lot of intimidation to get one to rattle. They are one of the most laid back rattlers of the family....

Totally agree with them being laid back. I came across one at Lake Texoma last weekend. It was dark and I was a teeny bit drunk. Thought it was a king snake or something cuz it didn't rattle at me. Picked it up by the tail before I realized it had rattles! My wife took a video of me holding it. It only tried to bite me when I set it back down on the beach, then just casually crawled off into the woods. Very cool snakes!

No you can't kill them legally. This means that people cannot take, transport, have in their possession or sell timber rattlesnakes.
