Usually as we start getting the first few fronts of fall it will get the smallmouth a little more active. You will start seeing some wolfpacks cruising around and feeding up so its probably one of the best times to catch a few out here. After seeing what the morning temps were gonnna be I decided to make an effort to chase a few bronze fish today. Tied up some super secret smallmouth jigs last night on a new jighead I have been pouring. I used 3/8oz heads and trimmed the skirt a lot shorter than usual. Over the years I have noticed these fish really react to some type of brighter paints especially orange and chartreuse. Tied up some burnt orange, whiskey and pale ale skirts with a hint of green pumpkin. I like to cut about an 1" off a green pumpkin speed craw as a trailer and dip claws in chartreuse dye. That was the ticket and ended up catching quite a few fish today with a good mix of smallmouth, spots and largemouth. Had 5-6 good slot fish and all the smallmouth went between 14-16". Really thought i was gonna get a monster but mostly just 2lbers today. did catch one big spot too that I wish I would have taken a picture of. Probably had over 25 fish total. I just fished the jig super slow around big isolated rocks along breaklines in 8-25' of water pretty much on the mainlake. Could not buy a moving bait bite or a dock bite at all today. Topwater was non existent and really saw very little baitfish too. Lake is kinda funky like its trying to turn over so that might be the issue. They are not really relating to points or anything consistently more so just the larger rock piles. I have a bunch of waypoints of isolated piles I have found over the years and they all just about produced a fish or two.
Sorry no impressive catches but I did want to show the colors of the smallmouth as well as the jig colors. Fun way to spend the day and always a blast to catch on a bait you make yourself too. Its aonly gonna get better out there and October into November can get you some bigger smallmouth if you stay with it especially later in the day.

Good looking jigs for sure.

Nice fish and really nice jigs. Do you sell them, or just make them as a hobby?

Come on over. Its about to get real good. My PB smallie out of there is 6.6lbs. I have caught a lot in the 3kb range and a few 4's as well.
