I keep seeing people claiming that lakes are tuning over.
Doesn’t a lake turn over when the water at the surface becomes cooler than the water at the bottom?
I know we had some cool weather this weekend but my surface temp gauge read mid 80’s from high 80’s, hardly enough of a drastic change to cause the lake to turn over IMHO. My guess is that the temp 4 or 5 feet down is still cooler than the surface.
My guess is there was some water getting stirred up from high winds out of the north blowing into the bank that has been calm and protected from the south wind of summer. But I think we are going to need much cooler air for a longer period of time for the lake to actually turn over.
Please correct me if I have the meaning of the lake turning over wrong.
Thanks

I have not seen anything up the lake but yesterday I did some some signs in the shallow pockets where the bottom temp and the surface temps are close together. Small signs but not major signs of a turn over in my opinion. The rain here while back with a couple of days of cool weather got the conversation started back then about a turn over. Who really knows ?

Fished this morning till 11:00. At the mouth of Ray, Chaney, Dale, SRA point, and in front of Oak Ridge there were bubbles coming up and collecting on the surface. Foam, and odor off colored water. I don't know what to think other than it isn't normal. This is only what I saw this morning not trying to stir anything up. Everyone can make up their own minds. Had to stop at car wash on way in to remove the heavy brown scum from the boat, it was clean putting in this morning at 154 ramp.
As I said, only what I saw. I'm not trying to sway anyone one way or the other.

Not sure there is anything to stir up. But I have seen those bubbles too and know what your talking about. I was fishing in the Brazos river and noticed a brown scum appearing all over my lures. When I got my boat out of the water I had a nice glaze of the same on my hull. I see people all the time skiing on the river, and can't help but think about that brown scum on my lures and boat.
Haven t been fishing on the lake Brazos end near Waco since.

Yes lake fork is in early stage of turnover. Water looks terrible all over, very stained and brown bubbles on top. Poor fishing as well right now for most. Same thing happened last year at fork.

was at lake pat Cleburne this morning (did ok caught 5, 4 keepers) saw a guy walking out onto the big concrete catwalk of the water plant where the aerators are normally on, they were off today. Asked him when they would be on he told me that they would be off for a few weeks due to the lake turning over. This was from the water management plant guys. Surface temp was 80.1

early turn over I thought, just hope we get it over with quick

I know it varies, but how long does it usually take a lake to turn over (take the current weather pattern were in)?

Could be a week or two before it is done but it would really have to stay cool. I wished I had a way to read the temp below the surface. I did notice the brown film yesterday but not in the mid lake areas. Guess it could be working up that way or the Lake Fork Lockness Monster is down there stirring up everything !
I think I hooked that thing one time... man it was mean !!
