I just practiced casting on concrete with my new fly line. I was casting for about thirty minutes. Is my line ruined? Do I have to go buy another line? I put it in the sink and it was still floating and I don't see any abrasions, just blackish oil.

probably didn't tear it up too bad, I'd clean it & use it, personally I am very guilty of using dirty fly line quit a bit since the guy that cleans it never shows up.

Depending on the coating type on the line, you should be able to clean and dress it and still use it just fine. 30 minutes on blacktop won't usually destroy a new SA Mastery, Airflo, or high-end Rio fly line. It will wipe out a Sharkskin line from SA, almost any Cortland line, and some of the less expensive lines for use on the water. They become "practice" lines after that.

You probably won't ever get all of that gray/black off the line that you've picked up. Some will get embedded as you clean the line. This tells you where you've got degraded coating (thus, performance). The cleaner (truer color) you can scrub that thing, the better it will perform; but do NOT use any sort of cleanser on it other than the mildest dish soap available (like Palmolive) diluted 10:1 by water. It's better to scrub it with a rough cleaning rag or sponge than to use damaging chemicals.

Most importantly, don't cast on pavement again. It's an expensive habit. 10 minutes casting on pavement = about 400 days of typical fishing wear and tear on a fly line.

It was a white river fly shop hobbs creek fly line, is that any different? It was really cheap. I really appreciate the responses!

When you buy a cheap line, you get what you pay for. I'd check it carefully, since the cheaper lines tend to have thinner, less resistant coatings.

^^^^ What he said!!!

I did the same thing when I got my first rig (also from bass pro) and I still fish with it today.

All the black came out with a good cleaner and dressing.

Basically means no big deal. It's not like you chewed up a $100 fly line. You were probably gonna end up upgrading that line within a months anyway.

Clean it, coat it, and fish it.
When it stops floating replace it.
No need to spend extra money until you have to.

Haha you guys are right, it floated today at the lakes at hometown. I was just worried that I wouldn't be able to fish it sooner than anticipated and wasted money...

I have played with sharkskin on blacktop with no ill effects that i could tell, same with textured mastry series.

if its rio, get some of their agent x cleaner and use that
