Well it help take the guess work out of it. You do still need to know how to read it but much easier to figure out what is down there Vs a traditional sonar graph. If budget allows go for it!

It's just another tool. When you learn how to use it right, it'll make you more efficient and get you on hot spots you may have missed otherwise. I love finding things offshore so it's worth it to me.
But, truth is, if you sucked at fishing before SI, you're probably still gonna suck after buying it. It's no magic bullet.

Do you like techy stuff? If you do...SI is fun.
If a cell phone confuses you....SI might not be the best tool for you.
Go out with someone who has one and look at the areas you always fish....and see if you like what it shows you.

If you have any desire to fish offshore it is a must. If you mostly fish what you can see then dont get it. My dad loves to pitch and flip what he can see. He has no need for side imaging. +1. Depends on how you fish. When I get too old to Pitch it all day, and, they get down to $200,I'll consider one.

If you are going to invest in a unit this expensive, go ahead and spend an extra 100.00 to 150.00 and hire someone to go out in your boat with you and teach you how to read this unit. I have been running Lowrance si for two years and recently had Doug Yates the Lowrance guru from BassPro in Garland go out with me for two hours on Ray Hubbard. He taught me more in that two hours than I have taught myself in two years and he charged me 100.00. Best fishing money I have ever spent!

I installed an HDS-8 Gen 2 w/ LSS2 last month. This is the coolest thing I've found so far (old railroad bridge). So, as you can see, it can help you locate structure that bass hold to.

I just bought a HDS - 7 last year and put it on my boat. It has really helped my deep water fishing (8 ft and deeper). It really helps you visualize what is on the bottom and find structure so much faster.

There are numurous units by Humminbird and lowrance that will give you side scan and down scan. Get the biggest you can afford.
