Yes it was a 22RE with a 5 speed overdrive transmission. Don't remember actually checking the tow mileage, but do remember driving my wife and 4 yr old from my house in South Ft Worth to Port Isabel (543 miles) om a tank of gas (around 15 gallons). I drove mine for 10 yrs and put 255K miles on it. I got $5k for it when I sold it because it still looked and ran great. I only can hope the Avalanche I now run will last half as long.

I have a F150 FX2 Supercrew with the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost. I get around 15 MPG towing my 20 ft Skeeter i-Class. Not towing I get 18 in the city and have gotten as high as 23.8 MPG on the highway. Scrap the idea of a small SUV as a tow vehicle.

Dam the fuel and just go get a 3/4 ton diesel and then you don't have to worry about anything. Bass&More you could spend all day correcting spelling on here. What are you a spelling bee judge. I would be concerned about the vehicles ability to pull your 20' boat up a steep, wet ramp before I was worried about anything else. How was that subject switch in mid paragraph. I know that I used the incorrect dam.

Ah yes, the ole "wanna reduce the amount of cars I own, pull a 20-foot boat but still save gas" dilemma. Let me know how it all works out.
By the way; 4runners don't offer an 8 cylinder anymore. Just a 4.0L V6. Good engine with 278 lbs/ft of tourque and 370 hp. This may or may not be enough for your boat.

I know its not your specifications but I pull a 17 ft boat with a Chevy Trailblazer and have no issues.

DIESEL. My 06 Dodge gets 20-22 on the highway, 4x4 running 35inch tires. It will pull any boat you want.. I'll never go back to a 1/2 ton truck.

I tow my heavy as heck boat with my 05 F150 5.4 3v supercrew with 3.55:1 gears, which also has a 2/4 drop. I also have an Edge Evolution with a towing tune and PHP custom 87 and 93 octane performance tunes. No issues at all towing with the EVO tow tune or the stock tune. Average mileage combined city/hwy is 17.5 mpg on the 93 perf tune and of course less mpg towing with the stock or towing tune. I am toying with the idea of switching gears to 4.11:1 gears for better towing performance since I have 22" wheels and 31.6" tall tires.
I'd never tow with an SUV unless it was a full size and RWD or 4WD.

I would not chance towing a 20ft boat with an escape for no one. That motor won't take that much pain and your right what happens when it rains? As far as a vehicle towing and saving on gas really don't know. Hope sime one chimes in for ya. Good luck, and happy fishing. Ditto...........Every time I see someone pulling a heavy load with a toy or a mid I just cringe and get outa their world as fas as I can, a 20' boat is a preety good load back there. Getting decent mileage is a plus but if you cant control or stop your load safely then your better off in the long run just staying home (repairs, insurance, fines, awards and leagal fees all taken into account). I dont see the benifit of maximizing gas milage during the week and then wearing out a truck or car engine/chassis to pull a boat on the weekend. If economy is your "foremost" concideration mabe you need to downsize your boat.

I have a buddy that tows a Ranger 488 with his Honda Pilot. He hasn't had any issues. He's done it for a few years (older body style pilot).
Or get a new truck and a beater, 4 banger accord for the commute. The V6 Pilot is only going to get 18 towing and 22 not. That's not significantly better than a V8.

Thanks for everyones input, gives me lot to think about.....I am retired and have to keep a close watch on the bucks and with two vehicals needing replacement it would be nice to kill two birds with one stone. Probably keep the truck even with the high mileage since it still looks and runs good and get a low mileage economy vehical. Only drive 30 miles each way to go fish. My son had a unique solution, buy an old Le Sabre with low mileage, put a hitch and some air shocks on and it should do the job.....May try that, can't loose anything if it don't work out....

I saw a 70-year-old man launch his ZX225 into Ray Hubbard behind an early 90s Cadillac Eldorado one time. One of the weirdest things I've seen at a boat ramp.
