Anyone pulling a 20' bass boat with a small SUV like a Ford Escape? Need to find a tow vehical that gets good mileage when it isn't towing.

The Honda Pilot and Mitsu. Endeavor are two good ones that will tow and get 22 to 24 mpg.

Just trying to get down to one vehical, insurance on two vehicals just about offsets the saving of an economy car and a pickup. Plus it's time to replace the economy car so..................thought I could kill two birds with on stone.

I wouldn't be scared to do it. Might be a problem stopping but with good trailer brakes..shuldnt be too bad.

I would not chance towing a 20ft boat with an escape for no one. That motor won't take that much pain and your right what happens when it rains? As far as a vehicle towing and saving on gas really don't know. Hope sime one chimes in for ya. Good luck, and happy fishing.

I used to pull an 18 foot bass boat with an 87 Toyota 4 runner that had a 4 cylinder that got 30 miles a gallon while towing. Wish they still made that set-up. I' d give up some excelleration and clutches for some better mileage.

I wouldn't sacrifice the power of a v8 for mileage. Actually, if you are planning on fishing enough, a 5.7 will get you better mileage in the long run (towing and commuting combined) than a smallblock v8 would.

My opinion, buy a used car (honda civic, or something along those lines). It will pay itself off pretty fast as a commuter vehicle, then have a truck for towing. Sacrificing power by towing with an escape is going to ruin that vehicle, not to mention make a dangerous driving situation too. A 20ft boat is way to heavy, escapes just aren't made for that.

Check out the F150 ecoboost! My 4x4 super crew has more towing capacity than most V8s. And when not towing I average 18 city and 21 hwy. a 2wd would probably do even better. Good luck

I looked at doing this exact thing awhile back. Took a hard look at the Honda Pilot, but just wasn't comfortable with it's towing numbers and the fact that's front-wheel-drive. I think any significant amount of towing would really hurt the life of the transmission and the engine. And all of that was considering my 17-foot Triton, not a 20-footer.

If you have a lot of miles commuting every year, a used Honda Civic will pay for itself. A V8 4Runner is probably your best bet for what you're talking about, but the gas mileage isn't really that much better than a half-ton pickup. It is better, but not much, and the half ton will still tow better.

I really wish they would make a nice half ton diesel.... We could end this discussion.

Well more I wish they would firm up the 2014 Titan as having the cummins diesel as an option. Rumored to get 30 MPG on the highway.

My buddy towed his 21' nitro for 6 months with his Nissan xterra before he has a warranty claim on his transmission.

Not unless it was a remote control boat, IMO. Sorry but a good friend had an 86 4 runner with the 22RE fuel injected 4 banger and it never got over 26 unloaded much less while pulling.
My 86 Toyota One Ton pulled my 18 foot Rangers all over the place for 14 years and had 240 thousand on it when I moved out of it to a 2000 Dodge diesel. That Toyota also with the 22RE and would do 27 mpg empty. Pulling the boat on the highway and I could expect around 18 mpg.
