I remember hearing a story about a guy's beagle that could smell out a bream bedding area. That would be cool, a fish pointing dog!

Our setter goes with us all the time, he is 15 so all he does is find a place to sleep in the shade
Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

take my yellow lab all the time she loves it and is very well behaved. she is the most calm dog and rarely if ever makes a noise, but when i set the hook the wimpering starts and she get's more fired up than i do. and there has been several times where i'll be going along not catching anything and she'll come to the front deck and start sniffing and then whimper a little and all the sudden i'll catch a few. don't know if she can smell a higher concentration of fish in the area or what but it's happened too many times to be coincidence. she's getting old now and i'm dredding the day i'll lose the best partner i'll ever have.

I've got a German shepard/rottweiler mix pup that I'm trying to teach to stay on my kayak. So far, it's not working out so good.

I had 3 blue tick beagle but I took one (Sam) with me most off the time. He was the most calm and didn't have the desire to jump out of the boat or jump in the water when we were bank fishing. Not a great hunting dog like the other 2 (Glenn Rose and Pecos), but a great fishing companion. The 2 boys, Pecos and Sam, died of snake bites. Still got Glenn Rose and she's calmed down enough in her adult years that she can go fishing if we take "dog breaks". Haven't taken my Spinone Italiano (Apollo) fishing yet. He's only 9 months old. Still teaching him how to hunt. Work on fishing later.

We have a lab/golden mix and she LOVES to go with us on the boat. Whenever she wants a swim, she just jumps off the boat and swims around. When she's ready to get back on board, she splashes around the back of the boat and I go and pull her back in. I've even caught fish while she was in the water.
If we're close to shore, she'll jump off the boat, swim to shore, do her business and swim back to the boat.
I think she gets more excited than we do when we get a fish on the line. Fun times!

Tink needs some help. She took a small treble hook down her throat Sat. It is now in her stomach. It was stuck in her Esophagus when we took her to the Vet Sat. afternoon. Luckily, it wasn't in her Trachea. It is currently in her Stomach and hopefully passing after giving her a VERY high fiber diet the last 24 hrs. The vet said that the A&M Vet school should be able to get it out. They would use an Endoscope. He let us listen to the call-$1500. (when did interns?underclassmen and non DVM's start charging those kinda rates?) My jaw dropped since I thought that was a "training/student " school. Kinda like when you can get your haircut for $5-$6 at a Beauty School. No dice to the $1500 folks at A&M who probably "pocket" $600 of that themselves according to most Vet rates!!!!!!!!!!! Anyhow....cuss....cusss. Cusss.. Pictures of Tink at the Vet and now. Have been checking on her for every 15-20 min. since the "accident." High Fiber diet and "Hopefully" it will pass through. After Eaing Punkin and Whole wheatbread- Me this afternoon checking after not finding the small treble hook in her pooh- It is still in her stomach and still keeping an eye on her. Hopefully, it will pass soon. Agonizing. Lesson(s) learned. Doug Mc

I love bringing my dog fishing. On plane she hides under the console and when we are fishing she will just kind of wonder around the boat, but as soon as she hears the whip from one of us setting the hook she is right at our feet ready to attack the incoming fish!!

I am going to start taking my dogs here this fall. I have a 40# Pitbull and a 125# Mastiff. I think I should only take 1 at a time though. The Pitbull is a retired hog catching machine and the mastiff is just a big lug.

Taking dogs is just like taking toddlers....patience and snacks help. I would go a few times with the expectation that you won't be fishing much but training a lot. Then they'll be a lot of fun to have around.

My experience is that its best to start taking them when they are pups. I've been taking my black lab since she was old enough to be away from her mother and she has become the best fishing partner I will ever have. Like mentioned above, avoid taking them out in the summer heat. keep a clean water bowl and a ziplock bag of treats/food in the boat. A small chew toy would be good too.
