Above anal fin or through the back.

Depends on how you are fishing and the size of your bait, but in general.

croakers/mullet-on the bottom or free lined- in calm water-no current- with or without weight- hook in between the anal fin and lateral line.

You want the bait's nose pointed up, so when they struggle they are swimming upward away from the bottom. Hook anywhere else and the bait ends up on the bottom for the crabs.

If you are fishing in heavy current then through the eyes/lips.

If you are fishing straight under the boat, suspended at a certain depth, then maybe through the back just behind the dorsal fin, above the lateral line.

And by the way, not to be a smart a$$, but I'm not interested in keeping my bait alive. I'm interested in getting it eaten.

Live bait lasts longer (just it case it doesn't get eaten right away) when they have room to swim. If on the bottom, make sure you use a longer leader.
