I have become bored with fresh water fishing and am trying to lurn how to fish salt water. I have been wade fishing in christmas bay 3 times now and really have not caught much. Last time I managed to catch 4 flounder and one really nice red. I have been using mud minnows and shrip on the bottom. I could use some help. I am thinking about trying san luis pass next time and am wondering what I should use for bait and how to rig it.

Try live shrimp or Gulp shrimp under a rattling-popping cork, rigged 18-24" down.

Try live shrimp or Gulp shrimp under a rattling-popping cork, rigged 18-24" down. You might have to use a small split shot to keep the bait down sometimes.

Catching fish consistently in salt water is a little different than fresh. You've really got to search for concentrations of baitfish, shrimp, AND schools of fish will be around them typically. There are lots of signs on the water to read to know if that's the case. Finding active bait, bird activity (not just a bunch of diving gulls, but the amount and species of bird can vary and if it's the right bird you only need one) and learning how to work slicks. Begin to understand what structure is in saltwater... it can be much more subtle than in fresh water but it's very important.. it will give the fish ambush points to attack food... and current, and how current flows across or by a structure is also very important. Thats it in a nutshell... but learning the intricasies of that is what will accelerate your fish catching ability. Check out http://www.troutsupport.com

I'd recommend either the surf on the West End or if the winds are making that front side wade a bit sporty that you try back on the bay side behind the Galveston Island state park. If you are using shrimp or finger mullet/minnows use a popping cork that suspends the bait just off the bottom. You can also use a silver spoon and work the grass on the drains and target reds.
...so good it tastes like it died screaming!

I like san luis pass myself I hear great things about rollover and have wanted try myself but the ferry can be a killer. At the san luis bridge go under it hook a right on the Galveston side follow the curve to the inner bay you will wind 3 or 4 tide pools you can normally cast net in those or at the opening of them where they meet the channel for shrimp, mullet, squid, and other bait fish. In the channel u can normally catch some flounder, reds, croaker, sand trout. Or after bait move to the surf by the bridge always get rays, sharks and the rest there. That's where I normally wade If you cast pass the sand bars you normally won't hook to many hardheads. Caught tons of fish there over the years only con is when driving out there make sure to follow the path to the beach front it's to the left of the gravel road. If not then 4wd is needed.
Never forget to treat the animals we hunt and fish for with respect.

there really is too many places to wade fish to list.all can be good at some time are another. takes patience to learn saltwater. freshwater, you can just about see where the fish are by the trees, cuts, inlets, banks, drop offs, struture, etc. You do not have much of that in the ocean. I like the gulp live new penny shrimp. Lately I have had better luck with a jig head and cocoho soft plastic with glow green tail. The thing is with them, trout and flounder will bite them clean in half..so rig it up with hook, close to tail.

Rollover Pass on the Bolivar Peninsula. It allows water to flow between East Bay and the Gulf. To get there go to Galveston turn east, left on Sewall Blvd. Go to 2nd street and turn left. you will run into Ferry Rd. Take it to the ferry. Cross the channel on the ferry and drive about 15 miles towards High Island on hwy 87. When you come to a bridge you are there. That is Rollover Pass.

Hard to beat a Gold Spoon (I like Johnson's brand, 3/4 oz) most days
Use a good swivel to eliminate line twist
