It sounds like the guide was more interested in his catch rates and bragging rights than the trip you paid him for, I've personally experienced this.

To the guides on TFF, hold on there before you get your panties all stuck in your crack..........If you don't think that in the competitive business of guiding that the numbers at the end of day don't matter to some......You'd be very, very wrong, because it does for some guides!

On the other side, how do you think the guide feels at the end of the day when he's put you on fish after fish only to find out you couldn't cast into a stiff wind to save your soul.

It's better to ask for the guides expectations up front, and then also express your expectations of your trip. That way there won't be any disappointments on either side and fun can be had by all parties.

Reactions are based on experience, we don't know what this particular guide had run into. Maybe he had a bad experience or two with people casting, and has decided to make it his policy.

From what I gather he cites it for safety reasons, I have seen on piers where the inexperienced can be pretty dangerous whipping around a sharp hook.

Whether right or wrong in our eyes, its his boat, and his rules. And its our choice if we want to work with those rules or spend our money somewhere else.

This is the lesson I've learned from my experience. I didn't think I'd have to ask if I can cast my own rod, but I know better now. My advice when you're interviewing a guide is to ask them to tell you ALL their rules and restrictions.

It might be nice to start a thread on interview questions for guides and make it sticky.

Also, I'm resisting publishing his name (not sure on the etiquette is on that), but its not important. Outside of this issue, he did a great job. And it may be possible to talk him into letting you cast. Regardless, just ask.

It would take all the fun out of it for me if someone else did the casting

This.

Also, it depends on your abilities. If he told me I couldn't cast, I would be done, let's go back. Sorry, I don't need someone to baby me, but if you do that's fine as well.

I don't get people who pick a guide out of the book without references. I would want to fish with the guy that's been vetted.

If you are talking inshore fishing, this is the first time I have ever heard of a guide who wouldn't let the customers cast. If a guide told me I couldn't cast on a 6-8 hour trout or redfish trip, I would tell him to turn the boat around and take us back to the dock.
