Okay guys, I usually lurk on the Bass side of this forum but I do fly fish occasionally. I am on my way to New Mexico next month to do just that. I will wish the Pecos for the third time and will be on the San Juan for the first time. I would appreciate any San Juan tips that anyone would care to pass along.

DRAG-FREE DRIFTS are your friend. If you aren't getting moss on your fly every now and then, you're not deep enough.

You'll be throwing some absurdly small flies that you may doubt any catchable fish would pay any attention to. Better believe that big trout will see and take those tiny flies. I say this because when you don't have confidence in your fly, you just won't work the fly or the run as thorough or hard as nymphing requires (esp. when you throw in WoollyBuggers advice).

Hit the local fly shops. They will help you out. I wouldn't buy any flies till u get there. I went two weeks ago and we threw tiny nymphs size 22 There was some dry fly fishing

A guide is your best friend for the San Juan. Conditions there are not anything like they were last year, and the conditions will be different next year. Plenty written about it on my site (Texas Fly Caster) - just go to right column and search box - "San Juan River" for guides, locations, stories etc...

Go see the guys at "Float & Fly" for the most current info on what part of the river is fishing the best and what flies are actually working when your there. You can spend a small fortune filling your box with flies you'll never use. Save some time and some kaching and buy what's working right then!

Have a blast. I love that river, especially the braided water and the upper stretches. I've had some awesome days dry fly fishing for browns at the tail end of Texas Hole with my quad bamboo none the less.
