When I fish the back with my buddy we work together on varying baits...if one is going to throw a slow retrieve bait we both will Good advice. If the guy up front is throwing a Rattletrap and covering water fast then the guy in the back needs to follow suit with a bait he can fish with the tempo of the man running the troll motor. Work together as a team. The mood is way more positive & upbeat if both guys are catching fish than not. And Never Ever throw off the back of the boat when the guy up front is moving forward. You will get hung up 100% of the time. It is a proven fact. LOL

Sound advice from all.
I do have a boat also but not versed yet as the trolling motor operator too much to think about.
I am old and starting the tournament idea and realize that I will be the back seat boater some of the time and needed ideas from experience instead of fish and learn. Not too much time on the water as they closed another lake in the Panhandle area yesterday.
We sure need lots of rain.
Thanks again to all who replied and perhaps before I die you will read about the old bass fisherman who did good.

Throw a senko type bait with a heavier sinker. But don't throw behind the boat if you are moving, it's a pain to have to stop, turn around and go back to get you unhung.

Fish a shaky head..... It's been called the #1 "back of the boat" bait in the world. I out-fish my dad 8 times out of 10 when using a shaky head in the back of the boat. It's deadly when nothing else works!

It does not matter , in front - middle - back , work as a team . Pin point flipping and casting will do the trick . Keep changing till you find a pattern that works . Yep

You want to be the best Back Seater he has ever fished with and still catch fish! That takes a conscience effort of your part, but will pay off in the log run!

I'd love to fish behind this guy especially if he like to throw spinner baits or cranks. Usually you can present behind a guy like this like you are doing a follow up to a missed strike with a finesse lure presented on light line and spinning tackle of some kind thrown in every spot he fishes and you will wear him out. You don't need the lure in the water all that long especially if he is fishing some kind of visual cover like stumps or a weed line. This style of fishing the fish usually picks the lure up the instant it hits the water anyway so hauling tail with the TM will work right in to this strategy....

Did that from the back on Toledo Bend during practice. Had a bad backlash. While I was picking it out a 2 pounder hit my crankbait that was still in the water. Pulled him in by hand while laughing my butt off. It was the best fish of the day.

My partner and I fish side by side. He likes me all close to him. I tell him if he hooks me...we fight.

I want the back of the boat most of the time as it allows me freedom to fish instead of driving. If the front guy is nose into the weeds flipping to a spot, I will work the outer edge. If he's moving along fishing docks, I will fish right behind him. We often throw the same types of baits. If we want to t-rig, we will agree to it. There are other baits you can fish at that speed. I keep 4 or 5 rods rigged with different types of baits so I can go to another style in a flash as sometimes you need that ability when you see something that looks good like a blowup on your buddy's bait that misses, hit it with a wacky worm or something on a finesse rig. You'll almost always get that fish to hit.
You have to be alert and reel in if he's turning the boat. You haven't lost anything just because you reeled in. It's not his job to put you on fish, only to drive the boat. It's your job find out what he's going to use so you can decide what you are going to do in order to be effective.
I always catch more than he does when I fish the back, and he does likewise when he's back there. We generally try to get the other person to run the trolling motor. Neither of us intentionally sabotage the other, so just let him know. If you just want to drag a t-rig all day, you need to branch out.
