Ok, so if you get the HDS5 its free but the other will cost you 600 bucks extra? If you're willing to spend the 600, why not get the HDS5 and buy an LSS-2 structurescan? That way you have both HD performance and DI. Plus, if you ever decide to get a second HDS unit you can network them.

Is this seriously a discussion? I wish I had that problem. Good for you bud. Is your dad looking to adopt a 27-year old with a dr. pepper addiction?
Take the free HDS5 and spend $500 more on an LSS-1 unit. Now you're fully upgradeable for bigger HDS units in the future, which will save you more money, but you've got SI and DI right now. Definitely a no-brainer.

Like I have mentioned before and just my . A wise man once said... Choose Lowrance if you wanna win tournaments. If all your doing is pulling ur kid around on a tube, then hummingbird should work just fine.

My partner runs a bird, wins plenty of tourneys so clay's argument doesn't hold water. Either unit will work, I'm partial to lowrance.

Clay, Kevin VanDam uses Hummingbirds. The guy that just won the Forrest Wood Cup uses Hummingbird. The wise old man may be old but not wise.

Jacob Wheeler was using Humminbird to practice and get to day 4 until he had to use FLW Boat on final day jsut like Jay Yelas another Humminbird FLW User. Biggest two sacks of the tournament came from Humminbird users?????
Humminbird Side Imaging has added coverage especially in 455kHz. for 180 Total Coverage and Superior Shallow Water Performance. Plus if you go with SI unit you can add 360 Imaging in the future and get the indutries only forward imaging sonar. Humminbird is leading the innovations with 360 Imaging and now iPilot Link.
If you are comparing apple to apples HDS5 would be more closer to a 798ciHD but Humminbird leads in pixel count in that unit with 640 x 640 Pixels versus 480 x 480 for HDS5. But the 800 Series gives you more screen area and more features for a little more than the 700 Series.
You got questions on any Humminbird Products let me know. Here to help and show what they can do.

No brainer on an HDS-5 for free vs an 858 for $600. 100% of unbiased folks would agree. HDS-5 vs 798 for the same price would be an argument. The 858 gets you less capability with a larger screen for an extra $600. Easy decision.
