A fellow fisherman called me today and told me that he heard on the mews that lake lbj was having algae bloom. Any truth to this?

LCRA has given a private company authority to spray for algae. A few treatments have already been done but only around a few docks. Its filamentous algae and its building up in the back of coves mostly.

Don't know about the bloom but I can tell you that last weekend when I went out there was a strong discoloration in several areas of the lake, mainly coves, that had a dingey color and not near the clearity that is normal for LBJ. My fishing partner and I commented on this many times while on the lake. Near the middle of the lake the water looked great. Don't know for sure but the lake is normally lowered every couple years for local boat dock cleaning, etc. for home owners and this has not been done lately because of low water in lake Buchanan to help for refilling. Possible cause right there, Just a thought.

After seeing that article, disregard that last post. It was sub surface, but I just thought it was dead Milfoil. It was quite abundant. I never thought it was strange, everything looked the way it has.

No, it should not hurt the fish. It grows off the bottom and floats up to the surface. Then drifts to the back of the coves. As it floats the sun takes its toll on it and it pretty much dies but doesn't go away. If you get it around your dock and its brown and discolored just take a water hose and break it up really good. It will help it go away. I saw some that was about a foot thick which will only go away with a chem treatment.

Whats bad about it is it will clog up the water intake on your motor.

Golden algae is a cold water issue guys, that's why it always happens early spring
