Happened to my wife and I three different times, one time on Fork with no storms to see I picked up my jig rod and when I went to grab my jig a spark jumped about two inches and made a loud pop, it took a couple of seconds to sink in and then we got off the lake.

Have had the "buzzing" rods a time or two... never a comfortable feeling a long way from shore.

I've only had it happen once. And just about the time we got under the bridge in Big Mustang, which took less than one minute, lightning struck a tree right where we were, previously.
Now days, if a storm is within' 10 miles, I'm off the lake. If your rod's buzzing, you're way to close to the storm and death. I figure the man upstairs gave me a do over. I'm not going to temp fate again!

Lightening strikes from the ground up, the electrons are looking for the least path of resistance and once they find a route... Light show... Glad y'all made it off the water safely! That's very scary!

My brother and I had the buzzing experience while fishing Ivie. We laid flat in the boat for about 15 minutes before it went away. Took turns checking if it was gone by raising our rods up. It was a very uncomfortable feeling!

I had it happen on twok from the bank I picked my rods up out of the truck and everyones hair stood on end and there were big blue sparks jumping between rod tips needless to say I droped them and hauled arse.
One girl out there had hair down to her but and every strand was standing on end.

Normally, there are 3 things that can happen before the big one; not in any certain order 1.Hair - on arms, neck, head, standing on end - normally a good sign to get off the lake 2.Line - after you cast and the bait hits the water the line hovers above the water for a second or two - also a good sign to get off lake 3.Rods have a tingling feeling or arching starts - very close to the point of no return leave lake now!!! If at any time there is a combination of 2 or even all 3 things happens at the same time, stand up, take good stiff drink of JD. bent over and kiss your butt goodby, yes Loretta you have waited waaayyy too long to leave Back when my daughter was playing FP softball, there were several fields in OK and La that had one of these http://www.rogers-hsse.com/lightning-detectors.html in the complex somewhere, not a bad idea, might be something that would work in the boat

Definitely a good time to get off the water. Being the tallest thing on the water and holding a carbon rod is not a good thing. I often wonder if there's a difference between being in a metal boat vs being on a fiberglass boat. Lightening strikes from the ground up, the electrons are looking for the least path of resistance and once they find a route... Light show... Not entirely true. Electrons travel from the sky to the earth. The objects on the earth have a positive charge and the clouds have a negative charge. An unseen path of positive charge is sent up from the earth and then a visible transfer of the electrons follow that path to the earth. We see the pulses of electrons. So a lightning strike actually starts at both ends and meets in the middle.

Stax, ask our bro about my one and only experience with "the force" relayed above. He was the other occupant and the operator of the boat.
This happened in December of 1996. There was a fast moving arctic air mass colliding with the warm air from the previous few day's low 70's. I believe those two systems met around Rockwall and up to Greenville. Then all heck broke loose.
I've never seen the sky go from high clouds and haze to black, blue and angry that quickly. From the time we noticed the western sky change colors until the time my 20# Maxima with a 1 oz. Lil' George was suspended over 30 ft of water, was no more than two minutes.

I have never had that happen but I have had my line float up into the sky on LBJ last spring. Way to close for my comfort zone.
