We were fishing tonight out on Ray Roberts and you could see storms rolling in. All of a sudden our rods started shocking us. It was just like shocking someone cause of static. It literally was impossible to touch the rods cause it was a continuous shock! Has this ever happened to anyone else? needless to say it was pretty scary and an uncomfortable feeling as we started seeing lightning off in the distance!!!

Time to leave!
I've seen the line just float in the air from the static

That's a warning sign to get off the lake. I experienced that once at Lake Lewisville. Very scary stuff.

I was on Ray Hubbard earlier looking at that lightning thinking of the first time I felt that about 4 years ago...
A wise man idled by.. shut down and said, "You boys feel that tingling in your rod when you lift it up.... That means you need to get your @** off the water or under this bridge"
Amen.

Had it happen once, fishing a top 6 on Possum Kingdom. Back of a pocket and lightening hit the hill about 1/4 mile away. EVERYTHING metal, including our flys took a zap, so we motored out of there ASAP! Pay attention to what is going on and listen to your gut and eyes.
Tight lines, keep safe and good luck.

Yep time to leave....you were about to meet your Maker. I've seen photos of a guy that actually survived this but the rod completely melted. I had a friends fishing in Tawokani that this happened to and they took a hint and laid down in the floor of the boat. Lightning hit with in just a few feet of them on the water as soon as they hit the floor of the boat. No one was hurt. Carbon/graphite is nearly as conductive as metal........

Had that happen to me at Fork one time. It was after a thunderstorm, I guess there was still a lot of static electricity in the air.
We waited another 30 minutes or so and everything was fine, it was pretty freaky for awhile.

I heard just the other day that more people have died from lightning strikes than in Tornados. Stick a Carbon Fiber Rod in your hand and you just uped the antie to traffic accidents!

A guy got struck during mcbass on rayburn a couple of years ago. I also saw one time no visual strike but the water just boiled up into a wav from the middle of nowhere. Started by looking like shad on surface then rolled up into a 2 ft wave about 30 ft across. Have had several times the rod sounded like the old buzzy rod whenever it was above our heads. We take the hint and leave pretty quick.

Under the current conditions you could have been juiced! So glad your training in things electrical sparked you into action to relieve the tension! Good job!
