A buddy of mine and I were thinking of Falcon this late January or early February, but perhaps a trip to Mexico might be in the cards instead.

What are your thoughts on the best bass lake to fish in Mexico and lodges there to go to? We are trying to break that double digit barrier.

Safety is a factor as well - any recent experiences would be helpful

Thanks Guys

Went to El Salto a few years back and had a blast. Have not heard anything recent though

Please take a look at my service. www.fishnteacher.com
I have retired and just want to go as often as possible. The rates on the site are for Corporate Trips. All you and your friends pay is expenses. The 10 day trip runs about $1,500 per person with 5 1/2 days of fishing. We are catching 100 Bass a day with 50 over 5 lbs. per boat.
I usually drive in on a 10 day trip. I also fly customers into Tuson, AZ. then finish the drive the next morning. You can fly into Obregon, Mx. but we can all drive down for the price of a plane ticket.
Please read my post and post a reply. You might get a free trip.

Anglers Inn on Salto is the best experience. Easy to get to, one hour north of Mazatlan. Other lodges on Salto have the same fishing experience, but Anglers Inn has the best food and service. Terry Hollan's Baccarrac Lodge for quality, and a bunch of em.

I am very partial to Sugar myself. I stay at Campo El Mirador on the water. Very safe and need be they will meet you at the border and drive you in. It is about 16 miles on the other side. I hit Falcon a day or two then make the less then a hour drive to either Romo or Rio Grande city to cross. Be at the border at daylight and get right in and be on the water 45 minutes or less. They will have breakfast for you and they will make you a sack lunch or you tell them when you are coming in and they will have lunch waiting for you. They speak very good English and will treat you like a King everytime. You can go fish Falcon and Sugar for less then half of what it cost to go to El Salto or any of them others. Best thing about it all is you will be in your boat. It is not if you will break your double digit, it is how many times will you break it.
Can not say enough about Sugar.

Your best bet is to go fish Falcon Lake for a couple days and make arrangements to fish Sugar Lake with Carlos who owns Falcon Heights Motel in Falcon Heights down by the Falcon Lake dam. You can stay there, fish Falcon and then go with Carlos in his boat if you want and leave yours there at Falcon Heights Motel where his family business will keep an eye on it for you. Carlos has not stopped fishing Sugar when everyone else did as he has a client that has been coming down for years every month of so from Okaloma and goes with Carlos over to Sugar. Carlos' phone # is MP 956-353-9629 and the motel # is 956-848-5229... You can not go wrong with Carlos in Mexico!

Carlos is the guy for Sugar Lake. He has family in Nuevo Guerrero across the dam. Although I used to go to Sugar lake, Nowdays, I will not set foot in Mexico, period! Living on the border, I hear all the bad news, and am familiar with the risks, particularly in the area on the way to the lake. I will fish the Mexican side of Falcon, but not up into Salinillas or Salado, and keep my eyes wide open.
Just fish Falcon or Amistad, they are hard to beat!

sugar lake is on my list for one day but more time needs to pass for me to feel safe after the Harralson incident.

I would say that El Salto is the best option for safety and large numbers and huge fish. Some friends got back a week ago Sunday and they caught 6 over 10 lbs and over 500 bass. This included large numbers of fish over 5 lbs. It is the easiest airport to get to with lower airfares. The hour and a half drive is mostly on a 4 lane toll road.
They stayed at El Salto Lodge which is like $400 or $500 less than Anglers which will pay for most of your airfare. I have stayed at Chapman's lodge on my first trip and I see no noticeable difference. They are both good. Boats at El Salto Lodge are older boats but have larger outboards. I have been there perhaps 20 times over the last 10 years, I feel very safe.

For the experience, go to El Salto. I do not care about the size of fish I catch on Salto anymore. I go because it is a super great time. Seriously though, if you are hunting for a 10 plus, go to Falcon or Sugar. I think your chances are higher there. I did spend some time with Carlos when fishing Sugar. We actually caught bigger fish at Las Blancas, but that was a freakish day. Carlos is a very nice guy and knows Sugar and Falcon well.
