I have a hummingbird 570, not the best unit but should do the job. I've been out on the main part of the lake ( Lewisville) a couple times now and have had minimal luck, a sandy here and there. I'm picking up lots of fish on the fish finder but not catching much.
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to go out with me this Sat to show me what to look for and how to use the equipment right.

I think your fishfinder is working just fine, I wouldnt start there..
TOW, lots of time on the water.
Switching up the baits, speeds, depth, that should be your main focus on what needs to change

It takes time. First thing I had to do was turn that fish ID thing off, hopefully You're not using that. Second thing was time on the water. Once you find fish, look at the unit and see what it looks like. That was the most helpful situation I found. Hope that helps some!
Good luck Mike

Hey Fishinfeen -
Don't blame the fishfinder. This is the most difficult time of the year to catch fish. The hot water doesn't hold a lot of oxygen and a thermocline is set in and the fish get sluggish and suspend a lot of the day.
I suggest using the Fish ID for a while. It is not such a bad thing as many lead others to believe. The fish ID can help you find fish when there may be a lot of clutter on the screen. More than just reading the sonar is understanding how to set the sonar to get the best results. When you see the fish symbols, turn the fish ID off and look at the arches and shapes. Don't assume just because you find fish, that they will bite.
This time of year many of us Guides turn to fishing live bait and using downrigggers to help clients get fish. Probably one of the best times to understand the relationship between sonar and actual fish is during October when fish typically become more aggressive.
Good luck with it!

One other thing, go through the graph pic thread and try to get a feel for what everybody else calls fish.
