I went fishing with my brother David this past weekend for alligator gar and we took some video and pics to document the trip. The largest fish was just over 7ft long! fun trip!!! the video is only about 8 minutes long and the big fish is at the end, (screen shot below the video post)

You caught that beast from a yak

What kind of bait did you use??

We didnt actually catch them from the yak, they pulled us around to much. We used it to set up rods along both sides of the bank that had bite alarms on them. We left the drag all the way loose so the gar could run and when we heard an alarm go off we would jump in the boat to run over to where the rods were set up. For bait we caught some common carp and buffalo right down in the same area and cut them into big chuncks (maybe 1/2lb up to 1 1/2 lbs). The area we fished is also really hard to get to with a boat so we used the kayak and canoe to haul all of our gear with.

Can't find 5/0 or 6/0 treble hooks to save my life any pointers?

I have also gone with a "double J hook" set up and it worked just fine. and you can get the hook out easier. just take a length of PVC with a slit in it lengthwise and slide it over the line and push it down to the hooks.
