Today while I was out on the elmfork, I saw a pretty good sized gar surface. I know it was to big to be a spotted or short nose, but it had more girth than I thought long nose gar had and I know alligator gar are very in common on the elmfork. Do longnose normally have a good amount of girth?

Yes they can. I see ones that look about six inches wide if if looking down at them in the water.

Are those sized ones normally the biggest they get?

I think it is well within the realm of possibility to see a sixty pound long nose during the earlier parts of the year. A fish that size is going to have a girth of better than 20" and be over 5' long or longer. Id say one that appeared to be 6" across would be a nice sized fish but the potential is there for them to get bigger.
