Ok, fixing to attemp to rebuild carbs and fuel pump on my Johnson 88 (j88tsledr)to hopefully fix some surging and rough idle issues.....couple of questions...are the jets, mixture and things like that already set or will i have to adjust them once running? Also, going to replace fuel lines while in there...is fuel hose from auto parts store fine to use??
Thanks!!

This is just the way I did mine, not sure if it's the best way. I just counted how many turns to tighten the screws all the way down and then removed them. Then when reinstalling, I tightened them all the way down and then backed the off the same amount as it was to begin with. The Fuel pump should be very simple to do. I would assume auto store fuel lines would be fine.

In my experience, if your fuel pump is bad, then you the motor simply won't stay running at all. It's usually a Yes or No type deal... If you're getting SOME fuel, I would save rebuilding the fuel pump till you've eleminated everything else... Auto fuel line will work. EPA wants you to use a special "non-permeable" fuel line that won't allow emissions to escape the fuel hose. But mine came from O'Reilly's Also, check/tighten fuel line connections from the fuel tank all the way to to motor. Air in the line will make you pull your hair out trying to figure out the source of the running problem. If needed, you can insert a piece of clear tube somewhere b/t the fuel tank and the motor to determine if this is happening. Just throwing some things out there that have given me grief Good luck!

The 88spl does not have air/fuel mixture screws. The only moving part is the float. So when going thru the carbs. If you don't soak them, I like to spray carb cleaner thru each orface and hole in the carb body and especially the bowl. Then behind each squirt, a blast of air. The carb cleaner will show if you have flow whille the air will blow out all the debry. Another old school method is to place the carbs in an old aluminum pot with water and boil them for 15 minutes. The boiling water will desolve all fuel residues and the water....well.....it will make a cup of hot tea. (Just kidding about the tea)

A fuel pump diaphram going bad will definitely cause ruff idle. It is the first thing to change when having 2 cycle motor running problems. Pay close attention to the float settings and check the reeds while your their.

I meant to direct my fuel pump thought to the surging issue mentioned. Interpreted this as a mid to WOT issue. Anyway, Glad Purdy offered his experience and you didn't just take mine! Hope that was the only cause of your trouble.
