Need some opinions on what the problem could be. I have a 2000 johnson 40hp and was running along wide open when I got a horn and the no oil light came on. Plenty oil in the tank, hose full going to the motor. Started engine back up horn and light again, pulled the oil hose loose fron the motor with it still running and it seemed as if no oil was being pumped out of the tank by the pump in the oil tank. I ended up leaving the oil hose disconnected from the motor and dumping oil into the gas to drive back to the boat ramp but continued to keep getting the no oil horn(even though I knew it was mixed into the gas). Would it be the pump that is in the tank that is bad or the VRO on the motor?

the tank does not have a pump in it. it is pulled from the tank by the vro pump. could be bad vro or filter in tank. could also be oil bulb from the tank.

The VRO on the omc's are notorious for dying. I have yet to meet a machanic that doesn't say to block it off and use mixed gas. Get a delete kit, mix your gas and forget about it.

Disconnect the wires going to the VRO pump and pre-mix.

Ok. There is something in the oil tank that looks similar to a fuel pump on a car or truck and has 2 wires going to the top of the tank attaching to brass rods that run down to this pump looking thing. What is this part?

I agree with ya bout the omc vro pump not being reliable. But my outboard mechanic (been an omc man for over 30 years) still rebuilds them and uses em. Dad has a 115 johnson ocean runner vro that is being rebuilt now because of running lean on number 3 but it was NOT the vro pump that caused it. It was carb gaskets on number 3 Do you have anything leaking under the cowling like fuel or oil

Yes it looks like there has been a slight oil leak and the bottom of the cowling has oil on it

Ours also had oil on it. Thats because of the number 3 cyl carb leakin. Ours was the same way. Would run great then all of a sudden. Dont run it and get it checked out soon. This is what ours did. Couple thousand later and hopefully its fixed. We are going to put it back together in a few hours. Ours was nothing wrong with the pump just the carb. If ya need a number of a great omc mechanic send me a pm and i will get ya a name and number. He is in the temple area
